STEAM BENDING IN COLORADO

I spent two weeks in July learning how to steam bend wood at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado, and this is one of my creations. The first of many experiments in steaming! As soon as I get my own steamer up and running, you will be seeing many more of these organic forms.

RECLAIMED REDWOOD AND JAPANESE JOINERY

Making this entertainment console was a great opportunity to use some old turn of the century redwood that I had accumulated and try my hand at using hand tools for all of the joinery. Redwood is a great wood for this as it's softness makes for smooth chiseling and good compression fit joints. I tried my best to leave all the idiosyncrasies of the wood (holes, paint remnants, kerf marks, etc...) so as to keep the wood's rustic character.

FINALLY A PIECE FOR ME!

It is simple and straightforward, but perfect for Celine and I's new space. As with my previous post of the coffee table, I used cherry and melamine for this credenza. Note that the drawers expand in width ala fibonacci sequence. Finally I have somewhere to put my records, sketch pads and books!

WINE BARREL EARRINGS

For those of you who remember the chairs I built for Bar Agricole restaurant, I still have a few staves of the oak wine barrels left. I used some of the wood to make these earrings for the lovely Céline Alwyn as a gift. Photographs by Mikey Siegal. Thanks Mikey!

FRAME BURNING #2

I apologize for my long vacation from the blog world. But I am back, and I intend on sticking around. Here is a cool picture of me burning a frame for a client who requested a charred, black frame to compliment a photograph of his. I also made him a shadow-box frame out of reclaimed white oak and with finger joints.

OPERATION 50 BAR AGRICOLE CHAIRS COMPLETE

These chairs, dubbed "Chair Agricole", I designed and built for the restaurant Bar Agricole, which opened in August of 2010. The restaurant is located at 11th and Folsom (http://www.baragricole.com/). The owner, Thad Vogler, is a cocktail specialist known for creating the bar and drink menus at The Slanted Door, Beretta, the Presidio Social Club, Coco 500 and Jardiniere.

Vogler's own restaurant, featuring a chef from Zuni Cafe, emphasizes wine and spirits. International glass sculptor, Nikolas Weinstein, has created a three-part hanging glass installation for the main dining room. The walls are made of reclaimed white oak from old whiskey barrels, as are the chairs built from cabernet-stained white oak barrels previously owned by Firestone Vineyard in Napa Valley.
